How One Chorale's 10th Anniversary Became a Children's Book

Ten years ago, a group of neighbors in Richardson, Texas decided to do something simple: sing together.

What started as a small community choir has grown into the Richardson Community Chorale — a beloved institution that brings people of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels together through the shared joy of music.

This year, the Chorale celebrates its 10th anniversary. And to mark the occasion, we created something new: Sing For Joy, a children's picture book born from that community.

The Idea Behind the Book

Every great community has a story. The Richardson Community Chorale's story is one of neighbors choosing to show up — week after week, rehearsal after rehearsal — because they believe music is worth making together.

That belief is at the heart of Sing For Joy. The book follows Maya, a young girl who isn't sure she belongs anywhere, until she discovers a community choir and finds her voice — literally and figuratively.

It's a fictional story, but it's rooted in something real: the idea that music has the power to create belonging.

Why a Children's Book?

The Chorale's members range from young adults to retirees. But the next generation of singers — the children who might one day join a community choir of their own — needed an invitation too.

Sing For Joy is that invitation. It's a way of saying to young readers: there is a place for your voice. There is a community waiting for you. All you have to do is show up.

Sing For Joy is a 40-page picture book designed for children ages 4–10. It's available as a hardcover print edition ($18.99) and a digital eBook ($7.99).
